HOW TO DEAL WITH ACNE

Acne is distressing for anyone be it a teenager or an adult. Acne is a condition caused by blocked pores which become infected. This is very common in teenagers because of the hormonal changes, but it can affect anyone.

Many companies are promoting over the counter anti acne products including creams, soaps and lotions. How do you select from these and what should you do to control your acne?

Avoid using facial scrubs and astringents as they will irritate the acne. Use a gentle, non drying facial cleanser such as Dove or Neutrogena and remove all make up at night.

Avoid touching the face with fingers.

Use water based or non-comedogenic creams and cosmetics which do not block pores instead of the heavier oilier types.

Do not scratch, squeeze or rub affected areas as this could result in permanent scarring.

When selecting over the counter acne medication choose one which has salicylic acid, resorcinol, benzooyl peroxide or sulfur as the active ingredient, these are usually mild but may cause irritation for sometime.

If none of these work, a dermatologist will prescribe medication and depending on the severity advice on having laser treatment or other cosmetic procedures.
