Summary: The cross is a symbolic icon that’s proudly displayed by those that express their religion openly.
The roots of religious jewelry date back centuries to where people utilized these pieces to avoid persecution. Nowadays, people wear religious jewelry as a proud proclamation of their faith.
The Cross
One of the earliest and most recognized symbols, the cross became openly used as jewelry during the 3rd century A.D. when the former emperor Constantine made Christianity an open religion to all of Rome. Ever since then, the cross has become a significant symbol and has been widely used in all types of arts, decorations, and jewelry.
There are numerous variations of the cross used in today’s jewelry – with the most common being the Celtic cross or the Latin cross.
Celtic vs. Latin
The Celtic cross has a cylindrical appearance that surrounds the cross itself. The circle is meant to represent the sun, which the Irish worshipped prior to their conversion to Christianity.
The Latin cross on the other hand portrays a long vertical bar that intersects above a shorter horizontal bar. There are two distinct types of crosses with one being the body of Christ and the other the other with the Latin cross left blank.
The Calvary Cross
The Calvary cross is a different type of jewelry piece as it has three graded steps leading up to the cross. Many believe that it represents the hill of Calvary where Jesus was crucified. However, it’s led a debate that it actually doesn’t. Whatever the case may be, it’s still an outstanding piece that’s aesthetically beautiful.
