Variety is nice; having plenty to choose from grants an illusion of personality in the range of our choices, but there are only a limited number of options to choose from, so how much free will do we really have? Kids arrive on the first day of school wearing any number of articles of clothing. Some have popular branded jeans or a pair of hip sunglasses, but they all sport a similar sort of wholesale clothing and protect their eyes from harmful UV rays using their wholesale sunglasses. Observe what people wear just a little more closely, and that illusion of truly personal choice begins to fade.
The more that this illusion begins to fade, there are certain social boundaries that we can begin to breach. When everyone keeps their necks warm with the same wholesale scarves, then we can try and free ourselves of judgments and fear of rejection and maybe be just a tiny bit more living to everyone. What a blissfully monotonous world that would be. But maybe we need those judgments. Maybe ridicule and fear are an inertly good thing that creates competition and thus promotes evolution. Then again, maybe it isn’t. We will never really know such answers until nature happens along one path or another. Still, it doesn’t hurt to wonder. You can’t reshape your reality without first dreaming of a new one. If we were to do away with such separating habits, like judgment, then little by little we could create a more peaceful planet.
